Quickpar

Aangezien het downloaden van grote bestanden uit de nieuwsgroepen sneller gaat dan met bijvoorbeeld BitTorrent of een P2P cliënt om maar een paar andere methodes te noemen is het ook wat lastiger. En soms wil het wel eens voorkomen dat een bestand niet compleet is en gerepareerd moet worden. Verderop wat je dan moet doen.

Dat je wel eens een bestand niet compleet binnen krijgt komt door het simpele feit dat de meeste nieuwsservers geen bestanden accepteren die meer dan 10.000 regels bevatten. Als je nagaat dat alleen voor een dvd van 4,7 GB meer dan 100 miljoen regels nodig zijn is dat dus veel te groot is om in zijn geheel te posten.

Daarom wordt een groot bestand met behulp van WinRAR opgedeeld in zogenaamde rar bestanden waaraan de maker een naam gegeven hebt, bijvoorbeeld DVD.part01.rar tot DVD.part95.rar.
De opgedeelde bestanden zijn weer onderverdeeld in parts of blocks. De reden daarvoor is dat niet altijd alle berichten op elke nieuwsserver terechtkomen. Soms ontbreken er gewoon een aantal n als je dan bijvoorbeeld bestand DVD.part73.rar opnieuw moet downloaden kost je dat gewoon extra tijd om deze weer op te zoeken en te downloaden.

Omdat de bestanden dus opgedeeld zijn hoef je alleen de ontbrekende parts of blocks te downloaden of te herstellen. In heel veel van de geposte bestanden heeft de poster daar al rekening mee gehouden en een aantal herstel bestanden mee gepost. Dit zijn Par of Par2 bestanden.

Par bestanden
Om ontbrekende parts of blocks te herstellen worden zogenaamde parity (.par en .par2) bestanden gebruikt. Om nu het bestand DVD.part73.rar wat we ook in bovengenoemd voorbeeld gebruikt hebben moet je een par bestand downloaden.
Als je dat binnen hebt gebruik je het programma Quickpar om het rar bestand compleet te maken. Het maakt niet uit welk par bestand je binnenhaalt, of dit nu DVD.P02 of DVD.P06 is, hou er echter wel rekening mee dat je met par bestanden maar een beperkt aantal bestanden herstellen.

Simpel gezegd komt het er op neer dat als er 10 par bestanden zijn mee gepost je ook 10 rar bestanden kan herstellen. Par besstanden herken je aan de extensie PAR, P01, P02 en ga zo maar door. Het is een indexbestand voor de gehele set en het wordt niet gebruikt voor het daadwerkelijke herstellen. Je hebt dus niet een par bestand met hetzelfde nummer nodig als je rar bestand. Repareren kan met willekeurig welk par bestand mits het van dezelfde set is natuurlijk.

Par2 bestanden
Par2 bestanden zijn vele malen flexibeler en kunnen meer dan par bestanden en worden over het algemeen vaker toegepast door de posters in de nieuwsgroepen. Het grote verschil tussen par en par2 bestanden is het volgende. Par bestanden herstellen, par2 bestanden vervangen. Als er voldoende par2 bestanden zijn mee gepost is het zelfs mogelijk om ontbrekende rar bestanden te reconstrueren.
In je newsreader onder de rar bestanden van je keuze kun je daaronder de par2 bestanden ziet staan.

Het getal achter het + teken geeft aan hoeveel parts of blocks er met dit bestand hersteld kunnen worden.
Als Quickpar aangeeft dat hij 60 parts of blocks te kort komt voor alle rar bestanden moet je dus par2 bestanden downloaden die bij elkaar opgeteld minimaal 60 parts of blocks opleveren, een willekeurige met 50 parts of blocks en een willekeurige met 10 parts of blocks. Quickpar heeft dan voldoende par2 bestanden om te repareren en je download compleet te maken.

Repareren
Als je met je newsreader alle .rar, .par en .par2 bestanden hebt gedownload staan ze bij elkaar in een map. Met Windows verkenner of een ander maar veel beter programma als Total commander kun je meestal meteen al zien of je download compleet is of niet. Alle rar bestanden moeten namelijk dezelfde grootte hebben met uitzondering van de laatste.
Is dat niet het geval en je hebt Quickpar op je computer geïnstalleerd staan is een dubbelklik op een par2 bestand voldoende om het programma te starten. Quickpar controleert dan eerst of alle rar bestanden aanwezig en compleet zijn.

Indien dit niet zo is controleert Quickpar of er voldoende par2 bestanden aanwezig zijn om incomplete rar bestanden te herstellen.
Rechtsonder in het scherm van Quickpar zie je de knop repareren staan. Klik erop en de herstelwerkzaamheden worden gestart. Gemiddeld post een poster maximaal 10% aan par of par2 bestanden mee. Daar moet je normaal gesproken met een payserver met een redelijke retentie genoeg aan hebben. Als dat niet lukt ben je waarschijnlijk te laat aan deze download begonnen. Samenvoegen
Als Quickpar de bestanden heeft kunnen herstellen staan de rar bestanden gezellig in een map bij elkaar. Deze kan je dan gaan uitpakken en samenvoegen met WinRAR om het originele geposte bestand weer terug te verkrijgen. Dat kunnen diverse bestand types zijn, video bestanden (.vob) of een image of iso bestand.
Als je het origineel hebt kun je de par, par2 en rar bestanden verwijderen van je harde schijf.. Quickpar is ook zo in te stellen dat het automatisch de par bestanden verwijdert als het herstellen goed verlopen is.
